Did you know, The Lost Pines forest is a 13 mile stretch of over 6000 acres of loblolly pine trees with a unique characteristic? It grows over 100 miles AWAY from the East Texas piney woods that are its genetic match.
Native legends tell how these trees found a home-away-from-home here in Bastrop County. When a Native American bride from East Texas became homesick after leaving her family, her groom went back for seeds to grow the trees she grew up with.
Scientifically, geologist describe the mystery of the trees as the effect of a massive prehistoric glacier that separated the central Texas loblollies from their East Texas counterparts. The separation so curiously described in both the legend and scientific data ultimately led to the name “Lost Pines Forest.“
My family lost our home in the 2011 Bastrop Wildfires like so many others did. We witnessed volunteers from all over helping to put out fires, find shelter for those displaced and even care for the animals that needed it. People near and far donated food, clothes and other necessities for the many displaced families. The Lost Pines truly is a place where anyone can find themselves feeling as though they have found a home-away-from-home. We came together in a time of need.
We strived to remain in the pines and help reestablish what was lost by replanting and rebuilding. Connection was everything at that point. In the aftermath of those fires, the community of Bastrop really came together to help one another rebuild and I will never forget how that felt. The outpour of support, the helping hands, and the community that became stronger was beautiful to witness and partake in.
Giving this name to my business is a small part of how I honor the memory of that time and continue to help the Bastrop community grow. Supporting and promoting local resources, as well as offering quality care for pets is what we aim to do. Caring for pets isn't what we do, it's who we are.
